Activity 1.3 Concept Sketching
In this activity my class was required to sketch objects from their front view which is the view shows the long side of an object. At first we sketched out simple objects like pencils and flash drives but then we started to sketch more complex objects like staplers and lamps. The purpose of this activity was to teach us how to sketch seeing as how we'll need it to clearly communicate ideas. This activity also teaches how to improve our sketching by informing us that a good sketch is realistic and includes shading. Below are pictures of objects that I sketched along with the answered conclusion questions for Activity 1.3.
Activity 1.3 Conclusion Questions
1. Explain the concept of proportion. How does the concept of proportion relate to creating a realistic sketch?
The concept of proportion is when a model of something is made either through a drawing or through a physical model that is built at a size that is in comparative relation to the real thing. For example if I drew a map of city that had a proportional ratio of 10 feet to 1 inch in comparison to the city that it was based off of that would mean that every 10 feet of the city equated to 1 inch on the map. The concept of proportion relates to creating a realistic sketch because if a sketch is proportional to the thing that it's based of then the size of sketch seems more realistic since it has been made in accordance to the real thing.
2. Why would the ability to create realistic sketches make a person a more competent designer?
The ability to create realistic sketches make a person a more competent designer because if your able to sketch realistically then it can make your ideas easier to understand and easier to communicate to other people.
3. Give an example of a visual or graphic representation of information that has more impact than an explanation of the information in text.
An example of a visual or graphic representation of information that has more impact than an explanation of the information in text is when one is making the blueprints for a skyscraper. Before a skyscraper is actually built one of the many things that need to be done is to sketch blueprints for the building. When sketching blueprints you need to make sure that your blueprints are easily interpreted, realistic and communicated properly or else the building might be built wrong and then it would be too late to go back and fix it without having to tear down the skyscraper. I believe that this is a key example of a visual or graphic representation of information that has more impact than an explanation of the information in text.
4. In your opinion, what is the most important thing to know/do in order to create a realistic sketch of an object?
In my opinion, the most important thing to know/do in order to create a realistic sketch of an object is that you need to make faint lines when sketching an object so that when you mess up you can easily erase the lines that you've sketched.
