Activity 3.1a Linear Measurement
In activity 3.1a we learned about SI units or units that are part of the International System of Units. All the countries in the world minus the United States of America use this system. The International System of Units is also known as the metric system. Under the metric system the units go by the rule of the power of 10.
Conclusion Questions
1. Explain the meaning of significant digits (or significant figures) in measurement. The meaning of significant digits in measurement is the digits that have actual value and matter when looking at the whole number. For example, with the number 000553 the significant digits would be the numbers 5,5, and 3 or 553 because does are the ones that are needed to determine the number.
2. Why is the metric system used instead of the US customary system, and vice versa, in various parts of the world? The metric system is used instead of the US customary system in various parts of the world because with the metric system it's easier to convert units since they abide by the power of 10 then it is with the US customary system. The US customary system is used in the United States of America because it's the main system that Americans have been taught to learn.
