Activity 1.6 Discover Engineering
In Activity 1.6, we reviewed the four main branches of engineering and also the Grand Challenges for Engineering which later helped us with our projects for Activity 1.6. In that project we made presentations based on the discipline of engineering that we wanted to take part in. Below is the definitions for the branches of engineering, my notes from this activity, and the different Grand Challenges for Engineering along with the video for the Grand Challenges for Engineering.
Branches of Engineering
- Chemical - uses the principle of chemistry, physics, and engineering to design an operation of plants for the production of materials that undergo chemical changes during processing
- Civil - plan, design, and supervise the construction of facilities
- Electrical - deals with the motion of electrons in metals
- Mechanical - anything dealing with mechanics and energy
- Sometimes these fields overlap
Grand Challenges for Engineering
- Managing the nitrogen cycle
- Make solar energy affordable
- Develop carbon sequestration methods
- Provide energy from fusion
- Restore and improve and urban infrastructure
- Reverse-engineering the brain
- Advance personalized learning
- Advance health informatics
- Engineer better medicines
- Engineer the tools of scientific discovery
- Enhance virtual reality
- Prevent nuclear terror
- Secure cyberspace
- Provide access to clean water
