Activity 1.5 The Deep Dive
In Activity 1.5, we watched the video The Deep Dive in which the industrial design firm called IDEO in Palo Alto, California redesigned the shopping cart. In this activity while watching the video we answered questions about the company and what they went through to redesign the shopping cart. Below is the Shopping Cart Redesign Design Brief, the questions for the activity and the activity's conclusion questions. Below is also the three videos from The Deep Dive program and my notes from this activity.
Conclusion Questions
1. What was the most impressive part of the team's effort? I believe that the most impressive part of the team's effort was how they updated the shopping cart to be more user friendly and protected from theft. I also liked how they made the shopping cart more modern with their innovations.
17. What advantages are there to having a design team with members that have non-engineering backgrounds? The advantages to having a design team with members that have non-engineering backgrounds are because with members from non-engineering backgrounds it can help you see the invention or innovation that you're working on in many different ways which can help you build upon your invention or innovation.
18. There was a point in the process where a self-appointed group of adults stepped up, stopped the ideas, and redirected the group to break up into teams. Why was this done? This was done because even in a free thinking group where brainstorming is welcomed you need some sort of leadership in order for a group to function properly. Otherwise, if there's no leader then everyone will try to be an individual which means that the group isn't a team at all.
19. At the end of the video, Dave Kelly states, "Look around. The only things that are not designed are the things we find in nature." Can you think of anything that would contradict this statement? I contradict this statement for two reasons. One, depending on your religion, if you have one, one might be inclined to believe that everything around them has been designed by a higher power. The second reason I believe that this statement isn't true is because nowadays with genetically modified organisms and the slowly growing able to design our own children, that statement is slowly becoming less and less true.
20. Consider the various versions of a design process (below on slides 6, 7, 8, and 9) that were introduced in the Design Process presentation that you viewed. How are the processes similar? How are they different? Reviewing the four design processes that were listed in the PowerPoint below I found many similarities and a few slight differences. The similarities were that in all of the design processes you identify the problem, investigate and research, develop solutions, to make a model or prototype, to test the prototype, and lastly to redesign or improve on it. The differences between the multiple design processes is one includes developmental work, a few include making alternative solutions, and some include making a design brief before really starting the process and also presenting the solution that they developed through the design process.
21. Do you think the tasks completed by the design team during the design challenge or the final solutions have changed if the team had followed a different version of a design process? Explain. Yes, I believe that the tasks completed by the design team during the design challenge or the final solutions would have changed if the team had followed a different version of a design process because if they had followed a different design process then it might've taken them longer to innovate the shopping cart or they might've made an even more updated version of the shopping cart than the one that they had made.
